The Problem

A Silver Spring plumbing company came to us in April 2026. They had been in business for 6 years. Decent website. Reasonable reviews. But they were completely invisible on Google Maps.

They were ranking on page 4 for "plumber Silver Spring" in Google Maps. Their local organic rankings weren't much better. They were getting 4 leads per month from their website and maybe 2-3 from Google Maps. They knew they should be getting more — Silver Spring is a dense market with constant demand for plumbing services.

Their website was actually fine — a basic WordPress site with decent load times. Their Google Business Profile was the problem. It was verified but completely neglected. No posts since 2023. No Q&A. No services listed. Wrong business category.

The Audit

  • Category: "Plumber" (correct) but no secondary categories
  • No services listed
  • 0 Q&A entries
  • Only 8 photos (all from 2022)
  • 0 attributes selected (no "emergency service," "24/7 availability," etc.)

Website

  • Lighthouse mobile: 55 (acceptable for an older WordPress site)
  • Had a basic "service areas" page but no dedicated city pages
  • No LocalBusiness schema
  • No plumbing-specific schema markup

Competitor Analysis

  • Top 3 Map Pack plumbers all had:
    • 15+ recent posts
    • 40+ photos
    • 100% review response rate
    • 40+ reviews with recent ones
    • Services and attributes filled out completely

The Strategy

This was a pure Google Business Profile + local SEO play. The website didn't need a rebuild — it needed optimization.

Week 1: GBP Complete Overhaul

We didn't just "update" the profile. We rebuilt it.

Changes made:

  • Primary category: Plumber
  • Secondary categories: Water Heater Installation, Drain Service, Sewer Cleaning, Emergency Plumber
  • Added all 18 relevant services from Google's service list
  • Selected every relevant attribute: "emergency service," "24/7 availability," "service-area business," "on-site service"
  • Wrote a new business description with local keywords — "serving Silver Spring, Takoma Park, Wheaton, and surrounding Montgomery County areas since 2020"
  • Added 25 photos: team photos, work photos (before/after), branded images
  • Created 4 posts: seasonal plumbing tips, emergency service announcement, customer testimonial, special offer
  • Responded to every unanswered review (12 in total)
  • Set up Q&A with 5 common plumbing questions and answers

Week 2: Local Citation Cleanup

  • Audited existing citations — found 6 directories with incorrect NAP (name, address, phone)
  • Corrected all inconsistencies
  • Submitted to 12 additional high-quality local directories
  • Ensured NAP consistency across every listing

Week 3: Local Content & Internal Links

  • Added dedicated Silver Spring plumbing service page to the site
  • Added LocalBusiness schema markup
  • Added plumbing-specific service schema
  • Linked from existing pages to the new service page
  • Added internal links from blog posts to the contact page

Week 4: Monitoring & Adjustments

  • Tracked Map Pack position daily
  • Noticed the profile was showing but not in top 3 — added more photos and another post
  • By day 28: Position 3 in the Map Pack
  • By day 30: Position 1

The Results

30 days later:

  • Google Maps position: #1 for "plumber Silver Spring"
  • Google Maps position: #2-3 for "emergency plumber Silver Spring" and "drain cleaning Silver Spring"
  • Organic traffic: 672 visits/month (up 255%)
  • Leads: 16/month (up 300%)
  • GBP profile views: 4x increase
  • GBP direction requests: 3x increase

What We Learned

This case study proves something we keep telling clients: you don't always need a new website to win on Google. Sometimes the problem is purely your Google Business Profile. This client had a decent site but a neglected GBP. Fixing the profile alone took them from invisible to #1 in 30 days.

The plumbing market in Silver Spring is competitive — there are dozens of plumbers fighting for those top Map Pack spots. But most of them have neglected GBPs. A thorough optimization and consistent posting schedule was enough to jump past them.

The client's phone started ringing within the first week. By week 4, they were getting more leads than they could handle.
