Why Your Gaithersburg Business Doesn't Show Up on Google

You've got a good business. Maybe great. But when someone in Gaithersburg searches for what you do, your name isn't there. Your competitor shows up. They get the call. You don't.
There are usually 4 reasons for this. Let's go through them.
1. You Don't Have a Google Business Profile (or It's Not Set Up Right)
This is the #1 reason. Google Maps rankings don't exist without a Google Business Profile (GBP). And most profiles I see have issues:
- Wrong business category selected
- Missing or inaccurate hours
- No photos
- No posts — ever
- The business description is blank or a copy-paste
If your GBP is incomplete, Google doesn't trust you. And if Google doesn't trust you, you don't rank.
Fix it: Claim your profile if you haven't. Fill out every field. Add photos. Post once a week. Respond to every review. It's free, and it's the single highest-impact thing you can do.
2. Your Website Is Too Slow
Google cares about speed. Not a little — a lot. Their data shows that 53% of people leave a site that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. So Google doesn't want to send people to a slow site.
Check yours at pagespeed.web.dev. If your mobile score is under 60, you're getting penalized in search. Most Gaithersburg small business sites I've tested score between 35 and 50. That's losing you rankings every single day.
The fix usually means a rebuild. You can't speed up a bloated WordPress site with 20 plugins indefinitely. We rebuild sites in Next.js and consistently hit 95–100 Lighthouse scores.
3. You're Not Optimized for Local Searches
"Plumber Gaithersburg MD" and "plumber" are different searches. One you can win. The other is impossible. Most businesses go after the wrong keywords.
If your website content talks in general terms about your industry but never mentions Gaithersburg, Montgomery County, or your specific neighborhood, Google doesn't know where you serve. And it can't show you for local searches.
Fix it: Your title tags, headers, and content should include your city and service. "Roofing Contractor in Gaithersburg, MD" is a title tag. "We serve the Montgomery County area" should be in your copy. Local schema markup helps too.
4. No Reviews or Bad Review Management
Reviews are a direct ranking factor for local search. More reviews = higher ranking. Better reviews = higher ranking. Fresh reviews = higher ranking.
If your competitor has 50 reviews and you have 3, they're going to show up first. Period.
Fix it: Set up a review request system. Ask every happy customer to leave a review. Respond to every single review — good and bad. Google watches how you handle feedback.
The Bottom Line
Most Gaithersburg businesses aren't invisible because of bad service or bad pricing. They're invisible because their online presence is broken in one of these 4 ways. Fix these, and you'll show up. We can help with all of it — or you can tackle them one at a time. The important thing is to start.
