How to Rank on Google Maps in Montgomery County

The Google Map Pack — those 3 businesses that show up at the top of a local search — gets about 40% of all clicks. If you're not in that top 3, you're invisible to most people searching for your service in Montgomery County.
Here's exactly how we get clients into the Map Pack.
Step 1: Fix Your Google Business Profile Completely
Most GBP profiles in Montgomery County are half-done. Google knows this. A complete profile gets ranked higher than an incomplete one. Period.
What "complete" means:
- Business name, address, phone — exactly matching your website and every citation online
- Primary and secondary categories — not just "Contractor" but "Roofing Contractor" and "General Contractor"
- Service area set correctly (service-area-business vs storefront makes a difference)
- Hours — including holiday hours if applicable
- Description — 750 characters, well-written, with keywords naturally included
- Services list — filled out with every service you offer
- Attributes — "Free Wi-Fi," "LGBTQ+ friendly," "Accepts credit cards" — whatever applies
- Products — if you sell anything, add it
- Q&A — answer common questions proactively
The average business has 60% of these fields filled. If you hit 100%, you're ahead of most of your competition.
Step 2: Get More Reviews (and the Right Kind)
Reviews are the #2 ranking factor for the Map Pack (proximity is #1). More reviews = higher rankings. But recency matters too.
A business that gets 3 new reviews per week outranks one with 100 reviews that's gotten none in 6 months. Google wants to see active, engaged businesses.
The strategy: Ask every happy customer for a review. Set up an automated text/email sequence that goes out after a service is completed. Make it dead simple — one click to leave a review on Google. Respond to every single review within 48 hours.
Step 3: Build Local Citations
Citations are mentions of your business name, address, and phone (NAP) on other websites. Yelp, YellowPages, Angi, Nextdoor, HomeAdvisor, BBB — there are hundreds.
Google cross-references these. If your NAP is consistent across 50+ sites, Google trusts you more. If there are inconsistencies — old phone numbers, wrong addresses — trust drops and so does your ranking.
We build citations on 100+ directories for clients on the Dominate plan. Manual. Verified. Consistent. It takes time but it's essential.
Step 4: Optimize Your Website for Local Search
Your GBP is important, but your website still matters. Google checks for:
- Title tags with your city and service ("Roofing Contractor in Gaithersburg, MD")
- Local schema markup (LocalBusiness structured data)
- City-specific landing pages if you serve multiple areas
- Fast load times — under 2 seconds on mobile
If your website is slow or doesn't mention Montgomery County anywhere, your Map Pack ranking will suffer. The two systems are connected.
Step 5: Post on Your GBP Weekly
Google Posts — the little updates that show up on your profile — are an underused ranking signal. Businesses that post weekly rank higher than those that don't.
Post offers, events, new photos, blog posts, before/after shots. Anything that shows activity. Keep it fresh.
How Long Does It Take?
In Montgomery County, most businesses can get into the Map Pack within 4-8 weeks if they do all the above correctly. It's not instant. But it's consistent.
The businesses that rank in the top 3 are the ones doing all of this — not picking and choosing. If you skip citations and your competitor doesn't, they win. It's that simple.
We handle all of this for our clients. But if you want to do it yourself, this checklist is the roadmap. Follow it, and you'll move up.
